In The Pavilion of Women, the main character is approaching her 40th birthday, a special time in the life of a Chinese woman. She is beautiful, still attractive, respected by everyone, and has a large and devoted family. She decides that it's time to give up sharing her husband's bed,"retires" to another part of her home, and commences a search for the "perfect" concubine to please her husband and fulfill his needs. This decision turns the entire household upside down and everyone (including her closest friend) is dismayed and distraught over what it will mean to have a concubine and her children added to the household. The heirarchy and pecking order will be affected by her decision. This is a touching and sad story of a woman who makes a decision with her head but fails to calculate the cost it will have on her heart.
