Probably one of my favorite books of all time. I was in China for a summer study program when I first read the book and even though I was far, far away from America and the America that spawned this unique novel, I still felt myself as if I was at the beginning of the twentieth century and experiencing all that Francie experienced. I especially love how the story is told from the viewpoint of a girl growing up in the midst of the feminist movement and how it did and didn't affect her. The story is about her, her mother, her grandmother, her aunts, about the women of New York at the time. Sure, the guys figure in, especially the tragic figure of Johnny, but it's the female figures who really bring out the story. I love, love, love Katie. =)
