Bruce Kelly, identical twin brother of Bryan Kelly from The Secret Life of Bryan, is back, and this time he's also relocated to Visitation, NC. But Bruce isn't the only one who's decided to move there. Cynthia Potter has made the decision to turn her life around. She's been on the run for a long time but now she's done with being a prostitute and is going to Visitation, a place that's appeared in her dreams. Bruce, a preacher and all-around good guy, first encounters Cyn in the parking lot of a diner. Seeing that a truck driver is harassing her, he goes to help before realizing that Cyn doesn't need the assistance. He can't help playing the white knight, however, and ends up driving her to Visitation. Cyn has some deep issues, and freaks out when she finds out that Bruce is a preacher. He deals with it in a way that shows how trustworthy he is, and then takes her back to his house. Obviously, Bruce is super attracted to Cyn, but because he's aware of her issues he takes the opposite tack and maintains his distance, so as not to scare her. He doesn't even care that she's an ex-hooker. He runs a safe house for prostitutes and has a deep understanding for her. Cyn has never in her life had a normal relationship with another person and doesn't know what to make of Bruce. She quickly gets wrapped up in life in Visitation, which involves all the characters from Say No to Joe? and The Secret Life of Bryan. Self-educated, she is determined to live and work on her own and prove her worth. Her relationship with Bruce begins to develop, but when her pre-hooker past catches up with her, things get very dangerous. Time to call out the boys! Joe Winston, Bryan Kelly, Deputy Scott Royal, Jamie the psychic mountain man, and a very protective Bruce all team up to protect Cyn, and it's really these parts where the books in the Visitation, NC series get fun. For some reason I like the idea of all of them hiding in the bushes with guns. It's happened in every book in the series, and I hope it continues in the next two. Once again, the writing is better than in the last books, but still not great, and the development is still heavy handed. There's a whole marriage plot device that's really weird. I'm also really bothered by the age difference between Cyn and Bruce. She's twenty-two, and he's...I can't remember exactly. (I flipped through the book and couldn't find it.) I think it's thirty-five, but maybe it's just thirty. Either way, he's a lot older than her. They mention it, and he says something like, "I said it was older, not too old." I kind of disagree. We're supposed to believe that because Cyn was a hooker for five years and living on her own, that's aged her more. I didn't realize hooker years were like dog years, especially since she stayed away from all drugs and alcohol, and she doesn't exactly act mature, but whatever. I think 22 is too young to be with a 35 year old, but that's my personal opinion. Age differences are not so drastic when the people involved are older, but 22 is really young. Anyway, the book was alright. I just really want to read the 5th, about Jamie. I'm sure it will be nuts, but it should be fun.
