Really loved this one! A screenwriter is asked to write an essay about his life, realizes it's boring, and turns to interview his grandfather instead. And Grandpa's life is anything but boring - he spins an awesome yarn about being a Russian Jew during the siege of Leningrad by Nazis in WWII. Everyone is starving, but when he's arrested, he's teamed up with the gregarious Kolya on a ridiculous mission to find a dozen eggs for a general's daughter's wedding. Things are dire, but luck seems to shine on this unlikely hero. "I tried to think of a song to sing, a poem to recite, but all the words were stuck inside my head like salt in a caked shaker." "...the black silence began to feel tangible, something that could get into your lungs and drown you." "The lonliest sound in the world is other people making love." But there's tons of humor in this too - I guess I only wrote down somber passages!
