As the parent of a child with Asperger’s Syndrome, I was excited to find this book. My son is very smart, but life skills just don’t come easy to him and I worry that he won’t gain enough independence to feel confident away from me for any length of time. This guide, published by Dorrance Publishing and written by a speech pathologist and a special education teacher claims to be suitable for a child or young adult with any disability. The writers have made the contents vague enough that they can indeed be useful to a wide range of people, but specific enough that you still know what you’re aiming for. The book has sections for hygiene, communication, behavior (such as touching and personal space), and daily skills (such as shopping, banking, and preparing snacks). After each section, there is a worksheet to help outline a family plan. I like that it’s open enough that you can “start where you are” and set a goal for your child.
