"He commenced to lay on the heavy cowskin, and soon the warm, red blood (amid heart-rending shrieks from her, and horrid oaths from him) came dripping to the floor." Would you want to witness this happen to your aunt because Fredrick Douglass did? Fredrick Douglass wrote his autobiography about his life as a slave and his escape. Violence in this shows how slaves were treated. Murder of a slave occurs in the book. Douglass describes so many things in the book like the scene. He explains how he tricked people to help make his life a little better like for his escape. Violence, in my opinion makes you understand what happened. Shootings occur that should not have happened. Mr. Gore shoots Denby and kills him for no good reason, but because he would not go to him. One major fight happens between slave and slave owner. Mr. Covey fights Douglass because he did not listen and became defiant. Owners of slaves whip them to get them to obey. Captain Auld whipped her right in front of him. Fredrick Douglass uses a lot of description when writing. He described the slave owners and overseers he had. "The overseer's name was Plummer. Mr. Plummer was a miserable drunkard, a profane swearer, and a savage monster." According to Douglass some slave owners used religion as an excuses when he whipped them by saying bible scriptures as he whipped. He described how slaves ate on the farm with great detail. "The men and women slaves received, as their monthly allowance of food, eight pounds of pork, or its equivalent in fish, and one bushel of corn meal." Tricking people helped Douglass gain his freedom. When he lives in Baltimore, he tricked other kids to get knowledge and in exchange he gave them food. After he got back he let the horses go and his owner thought he couldn’t work, so he got out of work. To escape, he disguised himself as a sailor and escaped to the north to tell people of his story. Fredrick Douglass wrote his autobiography about the horrors of slavery he experienced before he escaped. Douglass describes the whippings and murder in his book. Violence had occurred in his life such as the shootings and fights. Tricking people helped him get his freedom when he escaped to the north.
