Another brilliant novel by Cather - not as personally moving as My Antonia, but perhaps broader in scope. Her wide-ranging sympathy and pioneering spirit are both strongly in evidence here. Though she wasn't Catholic, she seems to have a good grasp of the contours of Catholic devotion.

This is a deep and magical epic from a madly witty author, Matt Ruff. (Every word he has penned is literary gold.) It is perhaps my favorite novel above all others, and is a visceral, habitable world for the willing and open-hearted.
