So I feel this pressure to give this book more than 3 stars because of it's cultural standing in our society and the influence of the mini-series in the 1970s. And I was thinking I would give it 4 stars, but then the second half of the book dragged for me. It is a documentary of Haley's roots, beginning in Africa with Kunta Kinte, and I suppose like any family tree, there are periods of dynamic events and then periods of life as most people know it where we simply just get through our days, no matter what our situation. But these less exciting periods of Haley's family history prompted me to skim quite a bit. Historically and culturally, I do think that this book has a place in the Western literary canon. But personally, it was a book I began to not look forward to picking up as I moved further into the book.

I read this one because it made the YALSA booklist for 2006. meh. Got to stop looking at lists.

Not my favorite by Coelho, but still a decent read
