** spoiler alert ** Admission is a good title for the book because it deals not only with the act of admitting students to Princeton but also admitting to secrets, failure and acceptance of where your life is now, regardless of where you had hoped it would be. The story centers around Portia, a woman in her mid thirties who is a seasoned Admissions counselor at Princeton University. When the story opens she is in the midst of her travel season, making visits to her assigned schools to talk with students on applying to Princeton. She has a chance encounter with a man, John, from her college days. The choices Portia makes during that visit lay the groundwork for the forthcoming acts of admission in her life. Portia has been involved with an English professor, Mark, for nearly 16 years. And while they have not gotten married, their lives are as dependent and intertwined as any married couple. That will quickly starts to fall apart. And as Mark's own admissions play out, it brings up many secondary plots from Portia's past. I was eager to read the book since I work in higher education. I liked how the background story is always life cycle of college recruiting but there were too many secondary plots-the author could have picked one or two to develop rather than write several that tied to the main plot but sometimes were a distraction. I was hoping the admission aspect would have played the central plot line rather than the foundation for the story. The book could have been about 100 pages shorter.
