Unexpected is the best word used to describe this book. I saw it about 20 times a day on the subway and wanted to read what all the fuss was about(because I generally don't feel that I share the same tastes as the general public). Finished it in about a week (an amazing feat for someone who works over 40 hours in the same span). Eugenides writing is vibrant; one feels as if they are in Greece, a slum in urban Detroit, or in waspy Grosse Pointe.
